San Francisco Hotel Overview

San Francisco Hotel Overview Few cities in the United States can rival San Francisco's variety in lodging. There are plush hotels ranked among the finest in the world, renovated older buildings with a European flair, and the popular chain hotels found in most American cities. One of the brightest spots in the lodging picture is the proliferation of small bed-and-breakfasts housed in elegant Victorian edifices, where evening hors d'oeuvres and wine service are common practice.

Another encouraging trend is the growing number of ultradeluxe modern hotels, such as the Radisson Miyako, the Hotel Nikko, and the Mandarin Oriental, which specialize in attentive Asian-style hospitality.

San Francisco hotel prices may come as a not-so-pleasant surprise. Weekend rates for double rooms start at about $75 but average about $170 per night citywide (slightly less on weekdays and off-season). Adding to the expense is the city's 14% transient occupancy tax, which can significantly boost the cost of a lengthy stay.

Several properties on Lombard Street and in the Civic Center area have free parking, while hotels in the Union Square and Nob Hill areas almost invariably charge $18-$35 a day for a spot in their garage. Most of the city's major hotels are on or near public transportation.

All prices are for a standard double room, excluding 14% tax
